legend

Around 1642 AD, a diamond found in India was set on a statue of a deity in order to seek the blessing of the gods. This gem was called “Blue Hope” and weighed 112 carats. But perhaps the shock of the gem made the gods close their eyes, and from then on, a strange and tragic misfortune accompanied “Blue Hope”, making it difficult for everyone who owned it to escape the bad luck of losing both money and life. A monk was discovered for stealing it and was burned alive. After several changes of hands, it was acquired by French Emperor Louis XIV, who polished it into a diamond weighing 69.03 carats, but he only wore it once and soon died of smallpox. Later, Princess Lamberna of the French royal family, Louis XVI and the Queen were all killed because of this gem.

The Blue Hope was stolen from the French Treasury in 1792 and reappeared in 1830. But it had been polished into a 45.5-carat diamond. A Dutch jeweler took great pains to get the gem, but it was stolen by his son, who committed suicide in anger. In 1911, the Washington Postmaster McClane bought the gem for $151,000. Two years later, his son died in a car accident, McClane passed away, and his daughter committed suicide by taking sleeping pills.

Finally, in 1958, another wealthy American, the famous jeweler Mr. Winston, bought the gem. He donated it to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., as a precious gift for visitors to appreciate. Since entering the museum, the nightmare attached to “Blue Hope” has finally ended. It seems that beautiful things must be shared by everyone.
